Added Accents

There's a store in Sanford I like called "Added Accents". Its name reminds me of Maggie lately. She's been speaking in different accents! For a few weeks, she changed all long "i" sounds to the "oy" sound. For example, she saw some blueberry pie in our refrigerator and told me she wanted some "poy". It took me a minute to figure out what she wanted! This accent reminds me of the old-timers from North Carolina's Outer Banks, often referred to as the "hoi-toiders" (high tiders) because of the way they substitute the "oy" sound for the long "i" sound. (Click here to hear a sample.) I have no idea where she has heard speech like that in her environment.

A few weeks ago Maggie's accent changed again. It has become very Southern. I may be guilty of that one, although I don't think my accent is as exaggerated as hers is at the moment. Most of her one-syllable words have become two-syllables now. It's really cute! She's my little Southern Belle!

Here's a short video clip of Maggie playing a computer game where she says a word that is a good example of her accent at the moment:
